October 20, 2007 7:14 a.m. EST Joseph S. Mayton - AHN Middle East Correspondent Cairo, Egypt (AHN) - Egypt expressed its support for continued efforts in the reconstruction and development of southern Sudan on Friday. They want to help in various activities such as electricity, education, health, irrigation and water resources. Egypt's official news agency, MENA, reported that Egypt was building three schools in three separate cities as part of projects by the Egyptians to enhance development and reconstruction in the region. A government spokesperson said that within the framework of supporting education projects in Sudan, "Egypt had offered 300 scholarships for students from southern Sudan." At least 173 of those students have already arrived in Cairo. The statements come as Egypt expressed concern over the crisis in the Sudanese government after a former southern rebel movement quit the government, leading many to fear a return to violence that persisted for two decades in a civil war.
