Quezon City, Philippines (AHN) - The Philippine government is promoting the cultivation and consumption of Moringa to boost health and anti-hunger programs in poverty stricken provinces.

Moringa or Malunggay in the local lingo is one of the indigenous vegetable trees being promoted by the Department of Agriculture. It is known to be rich in vitamins A, C and E, niacin, iron, calcium and protein.

Citing studies in Kolkota, India, the department said Moringa's root bark extract has anti-tumor and hormonal properties can help in the treatment of diseases like epithelial ovarian cancer.

With its antioxidants, Moringa can also help in treating arthritis, kidney diseases and other heart ailments. There are reports that Moringa maintains good eye sight and improves digestion and bowel movement.. In the olden times, Moringa was used to clean wounds and to relieve pain from stomachaches and headaches.

As for agri-business opportunities, the department said Moringa has a lot to offer.

In its powdered form, Moringa can be used to fortify noodles, soup and bread. Its seeds can produce an all purpose oil for personal health care products like shampoo and soap while its leaves, cakes and sepals can be turned into animal feed for poultry and livestock.
