November 12, 2007 11:28 a.m. EST Ed Sutherland - AHN Editor Santa Clara, CA (AHN) - Chipmaking giant Intel Monday will introduce a new line of chips which mark the first departure from traditional silicon to a material designed for smaller, more powerful circuitry. The AP reported Intel will unveil new chips built with hafnium, which solves the problem of power leaking as chips shrink from 65 nanometers to 45 nanometers, a reduction in size also said to cut power needs by up to 30 percent. High performance users, such as gamers, will embrace the new design's speed boost of between 7 percent and 13 percent. Aimed at gamers, the new $999 quad-core Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 provides 3 gigahertz clock speed. Intel also will unveil 15 new Xeon chips for servers that max out at 3.4 gigahertz and cost between $177 to $1,279.
