London, England (AHN) - Samsung Electronics has created a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag reader chip for mobile devices. The invention allows users of mobile devices embedded with the chip to check and store in their devices information on products and services with RFID tags.

According to the British gadget news and reviews website Pocket-lint, Chilhee Chung, senior vice president of Samsung Electronics System LSI division, said that with the chip, consumers can easily get more information on things like movies, clothing, and museums on their handsets while on the go.

Each side of the square RFID reader chip measures a quarter of an inch. The chip consumes little power or just 850 milliwatts so its application is suitable for mobile devices. The chip uses the 900 megahertz ultra high frequency range.

It will initially come in the form of a card that is plugged into handsets. Later on, high-end phones will be equipped with the chip.

The development of the RFID tag-reading chip is expected to boost the mobile RFID market, which is estimated to worth $27 billion this year and will grow to $700 billion in 2010.
