Tokyo, Japan (AHN) - Japan on Wednesday pledged aid to Tajikistan for the country's improvement of roads and water supply facilities.

The pledge was made by Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda to visiting Tajikistani President Emomali Rahmon in a 40-minute meeting at the former's office.

Tajikistan is adjacent to war-torn Afghanistan and the aid, according to Japan, is important to the stability of the Central and South Asian regions.

The Japanese premier in turn called on Tajikistan's support for a proposal to the global warming summit in Bali, Indonesia this month for the launching of a new framework to build a new effort to fight the phenomenon beyond the expiration of the Kyoto protocol on emissions in 2012.

Rahmon promised to cooperate with Japan on the environmental issue.

The Tajikistan president is on a four-day visit to Japan attending a water summit.
