December 6, 2007 9:23 p.m. EST Windsor Genova - AHN News Writer Johor Bahru, Malaysia (AHN) - More than 3,200 people in the southern Malaysian state of Johor were evacuated from their homes as continuous heavy rains inundated many parts of the region. Most of the evacuees, 1,346, were from Johor's capital Johor Bahru. A total 1,269 were also evacuated from the Segamat district, 623 in Kota Tinggi, 429 in Kluang, and 29 in Batu Pahat. Malaysia's weather department had issued a flood alert on Johor's neighboring states of Kelantan and Terengganu as it predicted moderate to heavy rainfall until Saturday night. The department also warned of strong winds and waves off Kelantan Terengganu, Pahang, east Johor, Sarawak and Sabah until Tuesday. The Star quoted officials of local police and fire departments as saying that they are monitoring the disaster and are prepared to act in case the floods worsen. The welfare department sent out food and emergency supplies to all districts of Johor, including the island of Mersing in the eastern shore of the state.
