Amsterdam, Netherlands (AHN) - The Dutch government has required all national agencies to use open-source software or freely distributed computer programs, including Open Document Format, by April 2008; state and local agencies are required to follow suit by 2009.

The Netherlands Economic Affairs Ministry on Thursday announced the new policy, which was approved by parliament on Wednesday.

According to CTV.ca, Ministry spokesman Edwin van Scherrenburg said some organizations will still be permitted to use proprietary software, if they are able to justify it.

The Netherlands is following moves by other governments to test open-source software to cut costs and eliminate dependence on programs made my U.S.-based Microsoft Corp., particularly its Office products.
