December 30, 2007 12:45 p.m. EST Dharmendra Ashwal - AHN Sao Paulo, Brazil (AHN) - Brazilian media recently reported that almost 300 swimmers were stung by swarms of jellyfish that entered shallow waters off a southeastern beach city. The swimmers were looking to cool off from a heat wave while they were attacked by swarms of jellyfish. Doctor Adriano Bechara told the Tribuna newspaper that at least 15 people along with teenagers and children were under treatment in Praia Grande due to severe stings, though their lives are out of danger. A number of jellyfish-stung people rushed to medical centres Friday and Saturday when they felt the sever pain of stings. Most of them were given small treatment and released afterwards. Authorities said it was an extreme heat wave over the southeastern region as a result of which the jellyfish filled the shallow waters off Praia Grande. Brazilian beaches are flocked by hundreds of thousands of people ever year during the holiday season.
