February 5, 2008 9:48 p.m. EST Windsor Genova - AHN News Writer San Francisco, CA (AHN) - Storms and tornadoes struck Memphis, Tennessee on Tuesday afternoon causing power outages that forced Super Tuesday polling precincts to close early and damaged homes, malls and an airport hangar. A tornado in Arlington also knocked down trees and a police communication tower. Trees were also downed and city schools were closed at 12:30 p.m. Election precincts in Dyer, McNairy, Tipton and Fayette counties were closed early to prevent injury to poll workers. Voting was until 7 p.m. but the precincts were shut at 6 p.m. WATV-TV reported at least 11,000 power outages in Shelby County. A portion of the Hickory Ridge and Sears malls were damaged trapping people in debris. There were no immediate reports of casualties. A FedEx hangar at the Memphis International Airport was heavily damaged. A tornado watch is in effect in Nashville.
