Bacolod City, Philippines (AHN)- Philippine volcanologists placed Kanlaon volcano in the island of Negros, central Philippines under alert level 1 after seven low frequency volcanic earthquakes were recorded for the past 24 hours.

Under the alert level, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said that there will be slightly elevated unrest and volcanic activity that could lead to steam and ash ejections.

Phivolcs advised the public not to enter the four-kilometer permanent danger zone around the volcano's crater because sudden explosions may occur without warning.

There is a likelihood residents of areas beyond the danger zone and downwind of the crater would be affected by ash fall during explosion.

The agency said it would continue to monitor volcanic activity and provide updates of significant developments. Mountain climbing and camping activities are prohibited to the public.

In 2006, Kanlaon had 23 ash ejections that rose up to two kilometers above the volcano's active crater.
