Los Angeles, CA (CNS) - "American Idol" has pushed many singers into the spotlight, think Sanjaia, and now an ex-boyfriend of Britney Spears is about to see the light. Robbie Carrico, who dated Spears for two months in 1999, made the top 24 on Idol Wednesday night.

Carrico originally auditioned in Miami and made it through to Hollywood Week. In Hollywood he sang the Bryan Adams song "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You."

Carrico didn't show up at Idol without any experience, however. In 1999, he was in the Orlando-based band Boyz N Girlz United which opened for Spears "Baby One More Time" tour.

According to People Magazine, Carrico and Spears dated for about two months and even made a public appearance together at the premiere of the film "Drive Me Crazy."

Boyz and Girlz United had a minor hit in 2000 with a song called "Messed Around" written by JC Chasez of 'N Sync.

Although Idol judge Simon Cowell told Carrico he made it into the top 24 without a unanimous vote, Cowell was joking. All three judges put Carrico through.
