Dhaka, Bangladesh (AHN) - Bangladesh is sitting on the fence when it comes to whether it will recognize newly independent Kosovo. Bangladesh is monitoring the Kosovo situation closely with like-minded countries and the relevant on-going United Nations Security Council deliberations.

This position was stated by a spokesperson of the foreign ministry when he was asked about possible recognition of the independent Kosovo, according to reports.

"The interests of the people of Kosovo have always been close to Bangladeshi hearts, and we are proud to have contributed to the stability of that region through our peace-keepers," he said.

"We are following the issue very closely with like-minded countries, and also the relevant on-going Security Council deliberations at the U.N.," the spokesperson added.

He also said that decisions on matters such as recognizing Kosovo's independence are always made based on perceived national self interest, the moral questions involved and the realities on the ground.
