March 26, 2008 10:39 a.m. EST Todd Lazarski - Celebrity News Service News Writer New York, NY (CNS) - Radio came one step closer to leveling the digital music playing field this week, as the Department of Justice decided that the merger between XM and Sirius satellite radio programming was not "anti-competitive," and therefore could go through. While the current competitors announced one year ago that they wished to join sides, the union needs to first pass legal stipulations, the last of which, and probably the toughest - FCC approval - still looms. The Justice Department cited that the two would still face competition from the likes of Clear Channel and Apple's iTunes. Both companies have struggled in competition since revolutionizing the radio industry this decade, but the move should allow a joint package to offer a combination of the best programming from each at an increased monthly price; while allowing a choose-your-package plan at a discounted rate.
