March 27, 2008 8:49 a.m. EST Isabelle Duerme - AHN News Writer Tehran, Iran (AHN) - Tehran officials sent a letter to the United Nations Security Council Wednesday demanding for a form of compensation for the losses inflicted upon Iran ever since sanctions were imposed against the country 2006. The letter, penned by Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki, and addressed to U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, also noted that the sanctions were illegal and failed to adhere to the regulations applicable to the international community, in the process of issuing the sanctions. Mottaki insisted that those responsible for imposing the sanctions and reverting from the law must give Iran compensations for the losses experienced. According to the Islamic Republic News Agency, the U.N. Secretary General continued to insist on the need to resolve the issue with diplomacy, despite the ongoing harsh exchanges that have taken place in the past six years, especially between Iran and the U.S. A series of U.N-imposed sanctions had been given to Iran, after some countries, led by the United States, had continually insisted that the country was in the process of developing nuclear warheads, a conclusion drawn by Tehran's ongoing uranium enrichment. In response, Iran had insisted that the nuclear plans were perfectly peaceful and were merely for power generation. Russian News and Information Agency reported that despite its claims, Iran had repeatedly been slapped with sanctions, with the latest freezing the accounts of certain companies and banks. It also ordered for the inspection of goods coming in and out of the country.
