Manila, Philippines (AHN) - The Web site of the American Embassy in the Philippines was defaced for several hours late Thursday, local time, with users complaining of seeing Chinese characters filling up their computer screen while accessing the site.

Users say that accessing the embassy homepage (http://manila.usembassy.gov/), was "problematic" as they were getting only Chinese text.

Several minutes before 8 p.m. local time, the site was still inaccessible.

Normally, users get fresh updates from the U.S. Embassy Web site, as the homepage is regularly updated, highlighting the activities and statements from Embassy officials.
