Nashville, TN (AHN) - Herb Rich, a three-sport star at Vanderbilt and defensive captain of the New York Giants in 1956 when they captured the NFL title, passed away Friday. He was 79.

Rich, born in Newark, N.J., was twice an all-Southeastern Conference player at Vanderbilt and member of two NFL championship teams, passed away at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He died of complications from injuries he sustained in a fall at his home several weeks ago.

Rich, a sixth-round draft pick by the Baltimore Colts in 1950, logged seven seasons with Baltimore, the Los Angeles Rams and the New York Giants. His 23-yard average on punts returns as a rookie for the 1950 Colts stands as an NFL record.

Rich won a championship with the 1951 Los Angeles Rams and was named twice in the All-Pro defensive back. He made 29 career interceptions in 65 pro games including three returned for touchdowns.

After football, Rich returned to Nashville and practiced law.

A funeral service will be held at The Temple, Congregation Ohabai Sholom Sunday at 1 p.m. on Harding Road in Belle Meade.
