Florida Padilla - AHN

United Nations Headquarters (AHN) - The United States has asked the United Nations to deploy 3,600 additional peacekeepers on the ground to the strife-torn Darfur region. In a letter sent to U.N. chief Ban Ki-Moon, U.S. the presidential envoy to Sudan said that the reinforcements is the way "to change the course of (this) tragedy" in Darfur, referring to the worsening conflict in the region.

"We believe that the deployment of 3,600 new African troops by June, a target number based on the U.N.'s planning schedule, will bring increased security and stability to the people of Darfur," Richard Williamson was quoted as saying by the Agence France-Presse.

The proposed troops will bring the total of the joint U.N.-African Union Force For Darfur (UNAMID) to 26,000. There are at least 9,000 troop members who are deployed on the ground.

Some soldiers from Egypt, Ethiopia and Rwanda are now being considered to be stationed in Darfur by June. The U.S. has allotted 100 million dollars to be used in training the African troops soon to be deployed.
