April 7, 2008 10:04 a.m. EST Jupiter Kalambakal - AHN News Writer London, England (AHN)- German utility E.ON AG submitted Monday a planning application to develop a $1.4 billion 300-mega watt wind farm off the coast of Yorkshire in northeast England. According to the Guardian, the application was the first received by the British government since State Secretary for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform John Hutton called for more than 33 gigawatts of offshore wind-generating capacity by 2020. E.ON's proposed Humber Gateway Offshore Wind Farm will have 300 megawatts capacity to supply electricity for 195,000 homes, the Dusseldorf-based utility said in an e-mailed statement to Bloomberg. The Guardian reported that UK's Ministry of Defence was opposed to the wind farm project. "The MoD is understood to have objected to the project because it could cause interference with its radar operations," the Guardian said. The UK plans to reduce carbon dioxide pollution by 60 percent before 2050. The move gave a window of opportunity to develop nuclear and alternative energy supplies like wind turbines. Renewable energy account for less than five percent of total electricity output, according to Bloomberg. The U.K. has an EU target of producing 15 percent of its energy demand from "green" sources by 2020 to help cut carbon dioxide emissions brought about by climate change.
