April 11, 2008 8:08 a.m. EST Jan Westmark - Celebrity News Service Los Angeles, CA (CNS) - In a shocking surprise, "American Idol's" Aussie rocker Michael Johns sang his last song Thursday night. The singer was voted off the competition, leaving seven contestants on the show. It was a surprise elimination, as many fans thought Kristy Lee Cook or Syesha Mercado would be the ones to pack their belongings. Mercado was the only non-surprise of the bottom three, which included Carly Smithson, Mercado and Johns. Johns appeared surprised when host Ryan Seacrest announced he was eliminated. He sang the song "Dream On" on Tuesday. As Johns sang one last time, he moved forward into the audience and ended the song on the stage behind the judges. The judges all hugged him as the credits rolled. Before he started singing, judge Simon Cowell told him, "I'm going to miss you. You're a very good singer and a very, very nice guy." The elimination is reminiscent of Chris Daughtry being voted off the show earlier than most thought he would. Daughtry has gone on to have an extremely successful music career, and Johns may very well be able to follow in his footsteps.
