Lawrence, KS (AHN) - Kansas' own "Big Three" are headed for a split next season as Brandon Rush and Darrell Arthur both declared their intention Thursday to go pro.

The other key piece of the Jayhawks' impressive victory in the NCAA national finals two weeks ago, Mario Chalmers, is still undecided on his future.

But Rush and Arthur have made up their mind, and winning coach Bill Self only had great words to say for the two premier players.

"Today is a great day for Kansas basketball," Self told the National Post. "I'm excited for the opportunities that will present itself for these two young men who have given so much to the program."

Rush has decided to forego his one remaining year of eligibility by declaring to join the NBA draft for a second time. He had been keen on going pro last season but was forced to return to Kansas after suffering an ACL injury in his right knee in May.

That may have been a blessing more than anything else as Rush extended his scoring prowess for the Jayhawks with a 13.3 points-per-game average. He also made it to the Big 12 first-team selection for the third straight year.

"I have learned so much at Kansas," said Rush, whose older brother Kareem plays for the Indiana Pacers. "It has taught me to be a better man and a mature man. I just want to thank all the fans and coaches for their support. I'm always going to be a proud Jayhawk."

Arthur led Kansas with 53 blocks this past season and was tied for second in scoring and in rebounding. He has yet to sign with an agent, opening the possibility that he might return to the Jayhawks for a fourth season.

"It has been a remarkable two years for me," he said. "I appreciate the love I have received here ever since I stepped on campus. I'm declaring for the NBA draft without an agent. I just want to thank the coaches, my mom and my family for all of their support."

Chalmers, whose 3-pointer forced the overtime against Memphis, remains undecided on his future. He is reportedly contemplating on his decision with his family and will make an announcement within the next 10 days, according to Self.
