Cairo, Egypt (AHN) - Turkey and Egypt signed on Saturday an agreement aimed at improving military relations and cooperation between the two nations. The Turkish Chief of General Staff Gen. Yasar Buyukanit was in Egypt to lay the groundwork for the framework last week.

He met with head of the Egyptian military Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, who doubles as defense minister, the Turkish military said in a statement published on its Web site.

According to the Turkish military, Buyukanit and Tantawi agreed to "improve and further military relations and cooperation between the two countries and that a memorandum of understanding signed on April 16th."

The agreement should boost military relations between both nation's armed forces.

The Turkish chief also met briefly with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to discuss the matter before returning to Turkey, the statement reported.
