Texas Panhandle, TX (AHN)- The world's largest wind farm is expected to begin construction in Texas when billionaire and oil tycoon T Boone Pickens makes his first down payment this month for 500 wind turbines, the Energy News said Sunday.

The report said the $10-billion farm would have 2,700 turbines and would be able to generate 4,000 megawatts of power once completed. It said construction would take four years.

According to the report, the wind farm is located in what is called the Wind West, home to the three largest wind farms in the USA. These farms produce more wind power than the UK, France and California.

In a related development, the Chicago Tribune said Southern California Edison would break ground for its wind transmission project, the largest in the US.

The report said the Tehachapi renewal project will provide 4,500 megawatts of electricity.

The project, it said, could power up three million homes by 2013 by harnessing the wind that blows through the Tehachapi Mountains about 100 miles north of Los Angeles.
