Los Angeles, CA (AHN) - The economic slump, combined with the housing crisis, has boosted the value of mobile homes among homebuyers.

Patricia Lambert, president of Harold Rowsey Enterprises which sells manufactured homes, told the Los Angeles Times the company has lately been receiving more inquiries about pricing and location.

At the Boulders at the Ranch, the increase was not just in inquiries but actual number of movers. Bill Lamey, president of the ranch's homeowners association, pointed out in 2004 there were over 100 vacant slots for mobile homes when he and his wife moved into the mobile home community. Today all the spots are taken.

Among the factors behind the growing popularity of mobile homes are the lower cost, built-in amenities and the unit's portability. A two or three bedroom house in a community with a swimming pool, spa, social activities and 24-hour security would cost a minimum of $1 million if it is on a fixed property. A mobile home would only cost from $20,000 to $300,000.

The growing attraction of mobile living has led to some mobile home owners raising their units vertically and offering the upper units for sale or rent to others. Because of the situation, the New Ventura County placed on hold all conversions until the park owners could present proof that their tenants support the new high-rise features of units in their community.
