Norman Vergara - AHN Sports Writer Columbus, OH (AHN) - Ohio State center Kosta Koufos has decided to forego his remaining years with the Buckeyes and declared himself available for the NBA draft, a local newspaper is reporting on its Web site. According to the Canton Repository, Koufos has informed OSU athletic director Gene Smith of his decision and that he has completed the necessary papers with the school. "I felt like this was the route I needed to take in my career and this was the most necessary route," Koufos told the Web site. "I've heard a lot of positive stuff. As of now, I'm just working hard and trying my best to reach my goal." Koufos' decision came after he initially suggested he will remain with the Buckeyes for next season. But the chance of playing in the highest level played to his mind, and he eventually declared to go pro for the June draft. "I had great friends at Ohio State and I wish them well," he added. "The fans were outstanding. I talked with (Head Coach Thad Matta) and he was nothing but supportive. He wished the best for me, and we maintain a healthy relationship." Koufos may not only see action on the NBA floor but also in the professional level overseas. The center may draw bigger salaries in a Greece-based basketball league than in the NBA, a FIBA agent has informed Koufos. This past season, Koufos averaged 14.4 points and 6.7 rebounds for the Buckeyes. He also led them to the NIT championship crown and won as that tournament's most outstanding player.
