Radiohead Says No More Free Download Albums

Los Angeles, CA (CNS) - Alternative rock band Radiohead won't be releasing any more free albums online, lead vocalist Thom Yorke says.

The group sparked controversy when they unexpectedly released their seventh album online free last October. Visitors where given a choice to name their price for the album, or just "buy" it for free.

But Yorke, 39, says that the deal was a "one-off" and won't be repeated in the future.

He tells The Hollywood Reporter, "I think it was a one-off response to a particular situation."

"It was one of those things where we were in the position of everyone asking us what we were going to do, I don't think it would have the same significance now anyway, if we chose to give something away again. It was a moment in time."

"In Rainbows" was released digitally on October 10 last year, but after the band had signed up with XL Recordings, the album was released again in standard CD. Their digital download success was unclear as they refused to reveal the outcome. However, upon its retail release, "In Rainbows" debuted at number one and earned widespread critical acclaim.
