New York, N.Y. (AHN) - New York Rangers forward Sean Avery was transferred out of the intensive care unit Saturday and will stay hospitalized while recovering from a lacerated spleen.

The 28-year-old rugged winger was admitted to the St. Vincent Medical Center following New York's Game 3 playoff defeat to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday and has been in intensive care since then. Avery is believed to have sustained the injury during the early portion of the match but somehow managed to continue despite the pain.

Doctors have yet to say when the forward would be discharged from the hospital depending on the recovery of the lacerated spleen which started bleeding Thursday. But one thing is certain Avery would have to sit out the entire season.

The Rangers, who went 33-14-10 during the regular season with Avery in the line-up, stave off elimination following a 3-0 victory over the Penguins on Thursday night and now trails Pittsburg 3-1 in the best-of-seven series. Game 5 is scheduled for Sunday afternoon in Pittsburg, where New York is expected to give it all in order to stay in the semifinals.
