London, England (CNS) - Fans certainly took advantage of the free song Coldplay offered online, after two million people downloaded "Violet Hill" since its availability last week.
The song, which is the band's first single from their new album "Viva La Vida," had been uploaded into the band's official website Tuesday. It had been made available for seven days as a free download.
A spokesperson for the band said had the song been chart eligible, it would have outsold last week's top 40 singles four times over, adding that the demand was "staggering."
"Violet Hill" is no longer available to download for free.
Meanwhile, it has recently been reported that Coldplay will play three free shows in support of their new album. The venues would be in Barcelona, New York, and London in June.
