May 7, 2008 7:55 a.m. EST Jojo Doria - AHN Atlanta, GA (AHN) - The former quarterback star of Georgia Tech Joe Hamilton has been charged early Tuesday with marijuana possession, driving under the influence of alcohol and a hit-and-run. The 31-year-old is the school's new assistant director of player personnel and was hired by Georgia Tech less than a week ago. Hamilton was arrested by Georgia Tech police shortly after midnight Tuesday after a description of a car previously involved in an alleged hit-and-run matched the vehicle he was driving. Hamilton later failed a series of field sobriety tests registering blood-alcohol contents of 0.193 and 0.199 in two tests which was way above the state's legal limit of 0.08. The former Yellow Jackets' quarterback was taken to the Fulton County jail where he remained Tuesday afternoon, according to a spokeswoman at the jail. Charles Curry, Jr. of Decatur told police that the alleged hit-and-run took place near the Georgia Tech campus where his vehicle was hit from behind after stopping for the red light, but the motorist just drove off. A witness was able to take down the license plate number which later matched Hamilton's, according to the police report. In 1998, Hamilton steered the Yellow Jackets to the Atlantic Coast Conference championships for that year. He finished runner-up in balloting for the 1999 Heisman Trophy.
