May 7, 2008 8:47 p.m. EST Windsor Genova - AHN News Writer New York, NY (AHN) - The Universal Postal Union and the United Nations Environment Program have joined forces to cut the carbon dioxide emissions of post offices around the world. The two agencies will jointly calculate the greenhouse gas emissions of post offices of 191 countries that are members of UPU, including the mileage and fuel consumption of their mail delivery vehicles. UPU and UNEP will then recommend to postal operators a range of solutions to cut their CO2 emissions. The UPU estimated that 660,000 postal offices use some 250,000 motorcycles, over 600,000 cars, vans and trucks, as well as hundreds of aircraft, to deliver mail abroad. "The sector therefore has a significant role to play in cutting greenhouse gas emissions," UPU said in a press release.
