Los Angeles, CA (AHN) - Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum will have to undergo exploratory surgery on his injured left knee if no significant improvement is reached in the next four weeks.

The 20-year-old center, who was examined by Dr. Steven Gecha in Princeton, N.J. Wednesday, was told that there was significant improvement in his injured knee but an exploratory arthroscopic surgery will have to made if in the coming weeks the healing will stop.

"I'm not surprised about it," Lakers coach Phil Jackson told the Associated Press "He was making progress and then he hit a wall and was experiencing continual swelling and backed off from that.

Bynum was injured in the third quarter of a 100-99 win over Memphis at the Staples Center, Los Angeles on Jan. 13. Earlier, the Lakers expected Bynum to be out for at least 8-to-12 weeks and return in time for the first round of playoffs, but Jackson ruled against that possibility even saying that the center could miss the rest of season.

If the Lakers' center does undergo surgery it is still uncertain if he'll be able to be ready once Training camp opens in the early part of October.

In the 35 games he played before being sidelined, Bynum has averaged 13.1 points, 10.2 boards and 2.1 blocked shots per game.
