Washington, D.C. (AHN) - California State Sen. Jack Scott has been named the new chancellor of the Golden State's 109 community colleges.

The California Community Colleges board of governors unanimously voted for Scott, who is chairman of the State Senate Committee on Education and Senate Budget Subcommittee on Education, to become the 14th chancellor. The appointment begins January next year.

Scott has issued a statement, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "The future of our state economy and even the California dream are tied to increasing the number of Californians who both enter and complete their college education. That is why the community colleges are so important. They can provide California a competitive edge in the global economy," he said.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger welcomed Scott's appointment, saying, "California community colleges serve a vital role in preparing our state's future workforce, and the board of governors could not have chosen a more qualified or highly respected candidate than Sen. Jack Scott," according to the Sacramento Bee.
