Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Less than a month after breaking the record for the highest disapproval rating in Gallup's polling history, President George Bush again broke a record on Thursday when the pollster said his approval rating among Republicans was down to 60%.

The rating is the lowest of the President's two terms among Republicans, according to Gallup. The trendline shows a steady decline from 72% in March and 66% in April. President Bush's average approval rating among Republicans is 85%.

Nonetheless, Gallup says other recent presidents also had record low approval ratings from their own party, including former Presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush.

Overall, the President's approval rating remains at 28%. Independents give him a nearly identical rating of 26%. As expected he is most unpopular among Democrats, who give him only a 7% approval rating.

Last month, the pollster found that the President's overall disapproval rating had reached 69%, the highest in Gallup history. It broke the record long-held by Harry Truman at 67%.
