Berlin, Germany (AHN) - Automaker VW reportedly plans to introduce by 2010 a two-passenger car able to get 230 miles per gallon. The plastic-and magnesium body is powered by a one-cylinder engine capable of a top speed of around 75 miles per hour.

VW CEO Martin Winterkorn said the car would be produced in only limited numbers, saying the auto "would not be a best seller," according to blog Motor Authority.

Possibly lending to predictions of low sales is the seating configuration, placing passenger directly behind the driver in what has been described as a toboggan-like arrangement.

The unnamed auto was first introduced as a concept in 2002.

VW will be competing with the 2010 Toyoto Prius and the Chevrolet Volt for attention from gas-conscious American drivers.
