Istanbul, Turkey (AHN) - Turkish military jets bombed outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) positions in the mountainous Nerwa and Rekan areas of northern Iraq on Saturday and Sunday in response to attacks within Turkey on Friday.

This bombing of PKK positions was the latest in a series of military actions Turkey has carried out since December in response to cross-border attacks into Turkey by the rebel group. The latest attack by the PKK came on Friday and early Saturday when PKK forces attacked a Turkish military post in Hakkari and killed six soldiers.

After that attack the Turkish army on Friday used its warplanes to bomb PKK positions inside Turkey, according to Hurriyet news reports.

Then on Saturday Turkey's forces went after PKK rebels in their bases in bordering Iraq.

Military officials said the latest military campaign was backed by artillery fire and killed an unknown number of terrorists, the Turkish Daily News reported Monday.

"The Turkish Armed Forces will continue to fight terrorism with an increasing determination and any treacherous act against the Turkish Republic and its army will be given an immediate and multi-fold response," Turkey's military said in a statement, the Turkish Daily News reports.
