Candidates In Hull, Quebec Election Focus On Health Issues

Quebec, Canada (AHN) - When Quebec City residents go to the polls Monday to select a replacement for Liberal MLA Roch Cholette, health care will be the focus of voters.

Six candidates are running on the byelection. Cholette's policy advisor and communications director, Maryse Gaudreault, is running under the Liberal party. Her strongest rival is Dr. Gilles Aube, from Parti Quebecois and a doctor.

Gaudreault is running on a platform of putting up a new medical school at more beds at the Hull Hospital, while Aube is pushing for the advocacies of the health lobby group Outaouais a l'Urgence.

Action Democratique candidate Jean-Philip Ruel runs on a platform of having a two-tier health care system for the Hull riding. Universite du Quebe l'Outauais student Jean-Roch Villemaire is the bet of the Parti Independantiste, which is running on a non-medical issue, but instead is pushing for the primacy of the French language and culture.

Aside from Hull, two other Quebec ridings are holding their byelections Monday. The two other are Bourget and Point-aux-Trembles.
