May 13, 2008 9:32 a.m. EST Vittorio Hernandez - AHN News Writer Ottawa, Canada (AHN) - The Ottawa City government has allocated $3.25 million to redevelop the Banff-Ledbury community. The area's facelift would be its first almost five decades after it was built. Banff-Ledbury's redevelopment is the first in a series of upgrades for public sector housing projects after Ontario granted Ottawa $6 million for renewal projects. Residents, at a public meeting Monday, complained to officials of the Ottawa Community Housing the children living in Banff-Ledbury are sickly because of the dilapidated state of the housing project. Molds grow on the walls and the heater is not working on winters. The OCH representatives acknowledged the problems and promised to address it. The community has 118 units. Residents would be moved from their units to give way to repairs. Ottawa has 350,000 housing units. To address the city's growing population and demand for houses, Ottawa drew up the City Housing Strategy to cover the years 2007 to 2012. The plan is broken down into three directions and made up of 36 strategies.
