New York State Democrats To Support Rent Stabilization Measures

Albany, NY (AHN) - Even as Rent Boards in New York state indicate a possible lease increase, pro-tenant bills being pushed by the Democratic lawmakers in the state may provide renters more protection from further escalation of their monthly rents.

Eight pro-tenant bills are expected to be deliberated Tuesday, with Gov. James Paterson promising to sign the measures if the legislature approves it.

The proposals include lifting the deregulated status of units for rent once it reaches $2,000 monthly rental and when the unit is vacated.

The measures, expectedly opposed by landlords, has the support of tenant groups and the Working Families Party, which are pressuring Senate Republicans to support as well the 8 bills.

New York City's Rent Guidelines Board will issue its decision by June 19 after it has conducted public hearings on proposals to hike rentals, although the board has temporarily approved a 3.5 percent to 7 percent for one-year leases and a higher 5.5 percent to 9.5 percent rate adjustment for two-year lease contracts.
