May 18, 2008 2:23 p.m. EST Amy Beeman - AHN Miami, FL (AHN) -- Florida Firefighters are working hard, yet again this month, as the latest fires rage through the everglades. CNN reported that 33,000 acres of Everglades National Park was burning Sunday from a blaze that started Wednesday. This fire comes on the heels of multiple wildfires that have plagued the state through out May. Authorities say the fire is 20 percent contained. While the risk to residential areas is minimal, residents of Dade County and some of Broward County have been on alert to be aware of the risks of smoke inhalation. John Pendergrast, a meteorologist with a multi-agency federal team that is coordinating the fire suppression efforts, was quoted in the Miami Herald as saying, ''Folks that are sensitive to particulates and heavy smoke might want to limit their outdoor activities. It could be a hazard.'' The article also says smoke and fog may impede visibility, so driving could be dangerous. Experts say Florida conditions have been ripe for wildfires this month. Low humidity, high temperatures, shifting winds and little rainfall have created an atmosphere in which fires thrive.
