Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) will remain head of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) said on Sunday.

Speaking during an appearance on ABC's 'This Week with George Stephanopoulos,' Boehner is quoted by Politico as saying, "Tom and I had a very good meeting on Friday - frank and constructive and positive. He's staying."

"We know the kind of changes that need to be made in order to help our members and help our candidates go out there and do their best in a very difficult environment," Boehner added, according to the Hill.

Democrats won their third straight special election in a heavily-Republican congressional district last week after winning a runoff for the vacated seat of Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS). There were reports after the victory that some Republicans were asking for Cole's resignation as chairman of the NRCC. Cole himself issued a statement warning Republicans that about "problems that are deep and serious in terms of how [they] are going to do in the fall elections," according to Politico.

Travis Childers defeated Republican Southaven Mayor Greg Davis in the contest for Mississippi's 1st congressional district despite concerted efforts by the GOP to prevent another loss. The victory followed former State Rep. Don Cazayoux's win over Republican candidate Woody Jenkins in the contest for Louisiana's 6th congressional district. In March, Democrat Bill Foster, a physicist with a doctorate from Harvard University, also beat Jim Oberweis, a millionaire dairy businessman, in the special election for or the congressional seat vacated by former Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert.
