May 21, 2008 9:12 a.m. EST Ed Sutherland - AHN Editor Los Angeles, CA (AHN) - PC maker Hewlett-Packard announced Tuesday second quarter profits rose 16 percent to $2 billion as revenue reached $28.3 billion for the period ended April 30. Speaking to analysts, CEO Mark Hurd said 70 percent of its sales now are from outside the United States. Revenue from Western Europe over all grew just 4 percent. Sales in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East rose 16 percent, by comparison. Hurd also said sales of HP laptops increased 31 percent, outpacing demand for desktops. Compared to $3.9 billion earned from desktops, the computer maker raked in $5.4 billion from laptops.
