May 21, 2008 10:27 a.m. EST Ed Sutherland - AHN Editor Washington, DC (AHN) - The Federal Communications Commission is reportedly negotiating with cell phone companies to reduce fees required when customers terminate their contracts. Cancellation fees can cost wireless phone users around $175. Alternatives being discussed include eliminating cancellation fees during the first month or 10 days after the first bill, according to the AP. As part of the talks, cancellation fees could be reduced the longer consumers remain subscribers. In return for lowering or eliminating cancellation fees, the government said cell phone providers could escape costly state consumer lawsuits regarding the fees.
