Regal Plans 3D Movie Screens

Los Angeles, CA (AHN) Movie theater chain Regal Entertainment Group announced Wednesday a deal with RealD Corp to bring three-dimensional films to 1,500 more screens. The 3D screens will help theater owners fight the encroachment of home theaters.

The agreement gives RealD over 3,500 U.S. screens and the lead over Dolby, which offers 3D viewing on 40 domestic locations.

Although theater receipts reached were up 5 percent in 2006, the addition of 3D viewing allows operators to charge around $3 above the average ticket price, the National Association of Theater Owners said.

In 2009, around 12 movies are expected to be released in 3D.
