New York, NY (AHN) - Even if there is an ongoing investigation, the root cause of the Friday crane collapse is still unknown, New York City Mayor Michel Bloomberg admitted Tuesday amid rumors of a faulty welding job.

Aside from the probe, the city's Department of Buildings is going over protocol and improving safety standards in construction sites.

Bloomberg, quoted by Newsday, assured city residents, "There are cranes used all the time around the world - there's no reason to think that ours are any less safe. I don't think you should start worrying about looking up."

According to the New York Times, the Upper East Side development was the first time the crane was used again after its machine's turntable was welded. To get deeper into the matter, the investigation's focus is on the crane's turntable and maintenance record, which are with the owner, New York Crane and Equipment Corp.

The company is operated by James Lomma. who owns 25 tower cranes used in different projects in the city.

Kate Lindquist, spokeswoman of the Buildings Department, told USA Today, forensic engineers are collaborating with Occupational Safety and Health Administration to analyze the recovered pieces to help them determine the cause of the crane collapse.
