Orlando Bloom and model girlfriend Miranda Kerr were included in those who attended the gala. Bloom, who just finished a play in the West End, and is getting ready to start filming a new movie, told People.com that "life is great at the moment." In addition to enjoying spending the evening with his girlfriend, the actor was also impressed with the occasion. "It is amazing to come and support something associated with Mikhail Gorbachev because of what he did," the actor said of the leader's role in the bringing democracy to the Soviet Union. "He's going to go down in history because of the way he changed the world." U2 frontman Bono made a surprise on-stage appearance at the charity auction, praising the work of the Gorbachev foundation. He then handed the microphone over to Hugh Grant, who opened the bidding at the auction. During the evening the auction raised more than $4 million for cancer research in the U.K. and Russia.
