Washington, D.C. (AHN) - The Supreme Court's 5 to 4 Thursday decision declaring the District of Colombia ban on gun ownership unconstitutional has sparked filing of similar lawsuits in other states.
The National Rifle Association said Friday it would file lawsuit against handgun prohibitions in San Francisco, Chicago and Willmette, Evanston, Oak Park and Morton Grove in Illinois, according to NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre.
Despite the Supreme Court decision, Chicago would not lift its ban on handguns. Benna Ruth Solomon, the city's deputy corporation counsel, said it expected legal challenges to follow the court ruling, but vowed to vigorously defend its position.
Chuck Michel, NRA's lead lawyer, said he would challenge other California legislation that covered a state prohibition on assault weapons, established a permit process for carrying concealed weapon in Los Angeles and San Francisco and placed restrictions on LA gun stores.
