July 4, 2008 11:02 a.m. EST Linda Young - AHN Editor Raleigh, NC (AHN) - Former Sen. Jesse Helms (R-NC) died Friday at the age of 86. Helms served five terms in the United States Senate before retiring in 2003 because of failing health. In his 30 years as a senator, Helms earned a reputation as being an advocate for conservative political causes. He was credited with spearheading the conservative movement. The cause of his death has not been disclosed. Helms opposed the voting rights bill and often expressed controversial views. AHN will provide more information as it becomes available.
