Wellington, FL (AHN) - United States Pres. George W. Bush and Japan's Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda have both said they will attend the opening ceremonies of China's Olympics, however, many leaders of European nations plan to stay away or send low level officials to represent their nations.
Pres. Bush on Sunday defended his decision to go, reportedly saying that boycotting the games would be an insult to the Chinese people and make it more difficult to discuss sensitive issues with Chinese officials.
But many European leaders say that they will send ministers or lower level diplomatic representatives instead of attending the Aug. 8 ceremonies themselves because of concern over human rights in China.
One of the exceptions is Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander, who has said he will attend in his role as a member of the International Olympic Committee. He will be accompanied by his wife and by Holland's Prime Minister.
