July 11, 2008 12:59 p.m. EST Jupiter Kalambakal - AHN News Writer St. George's, Grenada (AHN) Tillman Thomas, leader of opposition party National Democratic Congress, is Grenada's seventh prime minister. Thomas, 63, was sworn in as head of government of the Caribbean island nation, which belongs to the British Commonwealth, last Wednesday at the Grenada Trade Center. Governor General Sir Daniel Williams led the ceremonies. NDC won majority seats in the parliament, 11 of 15 seats, over incumbent Keith Mitchell's New National Party in Tuesday's election. Thomas, a veteran lawmaker and former political prisoner, was born on June 13, 1945 in Hermitage, St. Patrick. He earned his bachelor's degree in economics at Fordham University in New York. He qualified as attorney-at-law at the University of the West Indies, and finished his law studies at the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad. Thomas was founding member of the NDC in 1987 and was appointed as its assistant general secretary between 1987 and 1990. He also served as junior minister in the ministries of Legal Affairs and Labor, and as minister in the ministries of Works and Tourism. Thomas' cabinet is expected to be officially announced Sunday.
