July 15, 2008 9:11 a.m. EST Nilanjana Bhowmick - AHN News Writer Toronto, Canada (AHN) - The first videotape of a Guantanamo Bay detainee being interrogated was released on Tuesday. The video shows 16-year-old Omar Khadr being questioned by Canadian officials regarding the events that led to his arrest by U.S. forces in 2003. Khadr, a Canadian citizen was arrested for allegedly for throwing a grenade, killing an U.S. soldier in Afghanistan in 2002. The videotape was released by his lawyers. It shows Khadr in a distressed condition complaining of torture. A Supreme Court ruling in May ordered the Canadian authorities to hand over important evidence that will allow his lawyers to defend him. The 10-minute-long footage was filmed secretly through a ventilator opening. It shows him crying and moaning for help. Khadr told foreign ministry official and Canadian Security Intelligence Service agents that he was tortured at the U.S. military detention center at the Bagram base in Afghanistan. He also removed his shirt to reveal wounds. Khadr was 15 when he was captured. He is now 21. Khadr's lawyers said that they were hoping that the video will help them form public opinion to encourage Canadian PM Stephen Harper to demand that the U.S. not prosecute Khadr.
