July 18, 2008 6:21 a.m. EST Dave Kaiser - AHN Miami (AHN) - The National Hurricane Center is closely monitoring a new low-pressure system developing east of Jacksonville, Florida in the Atlantic Ocean. The system could strengthen in the next few days as it moves along the east coast. The system is expected to remain in open water as it drifts north-northeast, carrying with it scattered showers and thunderstorms. At the same time, NHC is watching tropical storms Fausto and Elida. Tropical storm Fausto, with 70 mph winds, is not quite a hurricane. Fausto is moving west-northeast at 12 mph, 425 miles south-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. A continued west-northwest motion is expected during the next few days. Tropical storm Elida, with 65 mph winds, is 1,100 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja, California. Elida is moving west at 13 mph. Gradual weakening is predicted as Elida encounters cooler waters during the next few days. The tropical storm is expected to become a tropical depression, with even lower winds during the next 48 hours. Tenacious tropical Storm Bertha refuses to weaken, it's winds are 60 mph. 825 miles south of Cape Race, Newfoundland.
